Levittown A Novel Manheim Wagner 9781532725227 Books

A story of a young nonconformist growing up in America’s second planned housing community, Levittown portrays life in the late 1970s with a sardonic eye trained on the country’s time-honored traditions and questionable preoccupations. Set against a backdrop of classic rock, NASCAR and elementary school life, Levittown is the tale of a young boy named Michael trying to find himself amid a swirling tide of scripted patriotism and false hopes.

Levittown-Novel-Manheim-Wagner/dp/1532725221Levittown: A NovelI grew up and lived in Levittown Most of my life and I found this book very "wanting". The Chapters were very short and plot nonexistent. It seems to have been able to have been set nearly anyplace. It was full of nearly pornographic musings of youngsters engaging in mastubation and foolishness at very young ages and a poor sense of humor, if that is what it is. I would suggest the Author return to elementary school and learn how to write. Reading this book made me physically ill.

Levittown A Novel Manheim Wagner 9781532725227 Books Reviews
A quick read. Levittown tears away any illusions of bucolic post-war suburbia, replacing it with portraits of middle-class America coming to terms with its multi-cultural self and love for the distractions of sex, drugs, and rock n' roll through the eyes of a (perhaps too) precocious elementary school student raised by a single mom and her parents at a time when such things were shameful, not normal. Michael's family, however, has no shame and brings him up in an environment of candor and sometimes caustic cynicism. Being young, Michael doesn't always know how to bridge the gap between reality and the childhood innocence of his peers, leading to conflicts and estrangement.
The protagonist/narrator is a little too insightful at times for his age, making him a bit hard to believe and perhaps missing the opportunity for some comic relief in an otherwise dark view of American suburbia in the late 1970s. Short of that I have no real complaints about the book or its writing, and would consider it a worthwhile diversion.
